A smoke machine heats compatible fog fluid to produce a visible atmospheric effect. The resulting fog can be used as an effect in its own right or to make lighting beams, patterns and movement much more visible through the air.

This makes smoke machines particularly popular alongside DJ lighting effects and moving head lights.

Smoke Machine or Fog Machine – What's the Difference?

In entertainment lighting, the terms smoke machine and fog machine are often used interchangeably for machines that create a visible cloud of atmospheric fog using suitable fluid.

Individual machines can still produce very different effects depending on their design, output and fluid, so choose according to the application rather than the name alone.

Smoke Machines for DJs

A DJ smoke machine can make a relatively simple lighting setup look considerably more dramatic. Beams that may otherwise only be visible when they hit a wall or floor can become visible through the air when suitable atmospheric fog is present.

For mobile DJs, consider portability, warm-up time, output, control options and the size of venues you normally cover.

Smoke Machines for Parties

Compact smoke machines can be an effective addition to house parties, function rooms and smaller events. Used alongside disco and party lights, fog can create a much more immersive dancefloor atmosphere.

Always use the machine in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and confirm that atmospheric effects are permitted at the venue.

Smoke Machines for Weddings & Mobile Events

Smoke effects can be useful for wedding and mobile DJ performances, particularly later in the evening when dancefloor lighting becomes the focus.

However, hotels and wedding venues can have strict policies regarding smoke, fog and fire-detection systems. Always obtain permission from the venue before using a smoke machine.

Smoke Machines for Clubs & Bars

Clubs and entertainment venues often use atmospheric effects to increase the visibility of moving lighting and create a stronger sense of depth across the dancefloor.

For installed applications, consider the size of the venue, required output, control method and how the atmospheric effect will interact with the venue's ventilation and detection systems.

Smoke Machines for Stage & Live Events

Smoke and fog are widely used in stage lighting because they help reveal beams and create depth around performers and lighting fixtures.

Different productions require different atmospheric effects. A dense burst of fog may suit one show, while a more consistent and subtle atmosphere may be better achieved with a haze machine.

Smoke Machines & DJ Lighting

One of the biggest benefits of atmospheric fog is its interaction with lighting. Suitable smoke can make beams and projected effects much easier to see in the air.

It can be particularly effective with:

• Moving Heads – Helps reveal moving beams through the room.

• Beam Effects – Makes narrow shafts of light more visible.

• Lasers – Can increase the visibility of compatible aerial laser effects.

• Derby & Moonflower Effects – Adds depth to projected beams and patterns.

• Strobes – Can create a stronger atmospheric effect in suitable environments.

Smoke Machine vs Haze Machine

Although both create atmospheric effects, smoke machines and haze machines are not the same.

A smoke or fog machine generally produces a more visible cloud or burst of fog. A haze machine is typically used to create a finer, more evenly distributed atmosphere designed to remain relatively subtle while making lighting beams visible.

For clubs, stages and professional lighting where a consistent atmosphere is required, browse our haze machines.

Low Fog & Ground Fog Effects

Some specialist machines are designed to create a low-lying fog effect that remains closer to the floor than conventional atmospheric fog.

This type of effect can be popular for stage productions, entrances and selected wedding applications where a dramatic ground-level effect is required.

Always check the individual machine specification, required fluid and operating instructions, as low-fog systems can work differently from conventional smoke machines.

LED Smoke Machines

Selected smoke machines incorporate LED lighting around or near the fog output, allowing the fog plume itself to be illuminated as it leaves the fixture.

This can create an eye-catching combined effect for DJs and parties without requiring a separate light to illuminate the smoke immediately at the machine.

Vertical Smoke Machines

Selected effect machines can produce a vertical fog burst, creating an effect often used in clubs, stages and high-energy event environments.

Vertical fog effects can be particularly effective when combined with integrated lighting, but output direction, installation requirements and operating orientation should always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Smoke Machine Controls

Control options vary between machines. Depending on the model, operation may include:

• Manual Control – Simple activation directly from the machine or controller.

• Wired Remote – Allows the machine to be triggered from a convenient position.

• Wireless Remote – Available with selected models.

• Timer Control – Allows compatible machines to produce fog at selected intervals.

• DMX Control – Useful for integrating compatible fog machines into a programmed lighting system.

Always check the individual product specification to confirm which control methods are supported.

DMX Smoke Machines

A DMX smoke machine can be integrated with compatible entertainment lighting so fog effects can be triggered as part of a programmed show.

This can be particularly useful for stages, clubs and professional productions where lighting and atmospheric effects need to operate together.

Browse our DMX controllers for lighting-control options.

Smoke Machine Fluid

Smoke machines require compatible fluid formulated for the particular type of machine. Using the correct fluid is important for both the intended effect and reliable operation.

Do not assume that every atmospheric-effect fluid is interchangeable. Always use fluid that meets the manufacturer's requirements for your machine.

Browse our smoke and haze fluids for compatible consumables.

How Powerful a Smoke Machine Do I Need?

The appropriate machine depends on the size of the space and how quickly you need to create the desired atmospheric effect.

• Small Rooms & Parties – Compact machines can provide plenty of effect for smaller spaces.

• Mobile DJs – Consider portability alongside output and warm-up time.

• Medium Venues – Higher-output machines may provide faster and more effective coverage.

• Clubs & Stages – Professional applications may require greater output, DMX control or more specialised atmospheric equipment.

Higher wattage does not tell the whole story. Output, heating system, warm-up time, duty cycle and the type of effect should all be considered.

How Long Does a Smoke Machine Take to Warm Up?

Most conventional fog machines need time for their heating system to reach operating temperature before producing fog.

Warm-up time varies significantly between models, so check the manufacturer's published specification if rapid readiness is important for your application.

Can Smoke Machines Trigger Fire Alarms?

Smoke and fog effects can interact with some fire-detection and alarm systems. Never assume that a smoke machine is permitted simply because it is being used for entertainment.

Always obtain approval from the venue or responsible person before use and follow the venue's fire-safety procedures and the manufacturer's operating instructions.

Can You Use a Smoke Machine Indoors?

Many entertainment smoke machines are designed for appropriate indoor use, but the venue, ventilation, fire-detection system and manufacturer's instructions must all be considered.

Never use atmospheric effects where they are prohibited or where their use could interfere with safety systems.

Can Smoke Machines Be Used Outdoors?

Only use a machine outdoors when the manufacturer permits it and the equipment is protected appropriately from weather and moisture.

Atmospheric effects can also disperse quickly outdoors due to wind and open space, so results can differ significantly from indoor use.

Choosing the Right Smoke Machine

Before buying, consider:

• Venue Size – Match the machine's output to the spaces you normally use.

• Type of Effect – Conventional fog, vertical effect, low fog or another specialist application.

• Control Method – Manual, remote, timer or DMX depending on the model.

• Warm-Up Time – Important when fast operation is required.

• Portability – Consider size and weight for mobile use.

• Compatible Fluid – Follow the manufacturer's fluid requirements.

• Venue Permission – Confirm that smoke or fog effects are allowed before use.
