Wolfmix WING Explained: What's New & What It Does | DJBox.ie

Wolfmix WING: A Major Expansion for the Wolfmix W1

The Wolfmix WING is not a replacement for the popular Wolfmix W1. It is a dedicated expansion controller that adds motorised faders, OLED displays, Cue Lists, direct fixture control, subgroups, custom mapping and additional DMX capacity to the Wolfmix workflow.

Wolfmix has built a strong following with the Wolfmix W1, giving DJs, musicians and lighting operators hands-on DMX control without needing to run their lighting show from a computer.

Now Wolfmix is taking that concept considerably further with the new Wolfmix WING.

WING works alongside the W1, providing a much larger physical control surface and introducing features that allow significantly more structured and detailed show programming.

Good news for existing Wolfmix owners: WING is compatible with Wolfmix W1 MK1, MK2 and MK3. You do not need to replace an existing W1 with the latest model to use it.

What Exactly Is Wolfmix WING?

Think of WING as a major physical and operational expansion for the Wolfmix system.

Connect it to a W1 and you gain a much larger hands-on control surface built around:

  • 8 motorised faders
  • 8 OLED displays
  • 8 x 5 RGB button matrix
  • Dedicated main output fader
  • Four encoders
  • Dedicated OK/GO and CANCEL controls
  • Cue List mode
  • Direct Control mode
  • Customisable Mapping mode
  • Additional DMX outputs and universes

The important point is that WING is not simply a bank of extra buttons and faders. It expands the way a Wolfmix system can be programmed and operated.

The Big Story: Cue List

WING adds a much more structured way of running a lighting show. Instead of relying entirely on live triggering, Cue List lets you build sequences in advance for songs, performances, scenes or complete sections of a production.

Motorised Faders – And Why They Matter

One of the most immediately noticeable additions is a bank of eight motorised faders.

Each fader features capacitive touch and an RGB light guide, while eight OLED strip displays provide visual information about the parameters being controlled.

Because the faders are motorised, their physical positions can update as you move between different controls and pages.

For live operation, that gives you something very different from simply attaching a generic MIDI controller to a W1.

The 8 x 5 RGB button matrix above the faders also provides direct access to groups, fixtures, presets and other assigned functions.

Cue List Changes What You Can Do With Wolfmix

Perhaps the biggest addition is Cue List.

The original Wolfmix concept is particularly well suited to hands-on live lighting control. Cue List adds the ability to organise lighting changes into a structured sequence.

Presets can be arranged into a sequence for a song, performance, scene, act or other section of a production.

A cue can contain up to five stacked presets, provided those presets control different elements. Fade and hold times can be assigned, and cues can either advance automatically or be manually triggered using the dedicated GO control.

MIDI Time Code input is also supported, allowing cue playback to follow external timecode.

In simple terms, you can build a structured lighting sequence in advance rather than having to manually trigger every change during a performance.

For bands, theatre, live productions and more tightly programmed DJ or stage shows, that is a significant expansion of what can be built around a Wolfmix system.

More Precise Control With Subgroups

WING also introduces another useful feature for larger lighting rigs: subgroups.

The system provides eight fixture groups, and each of those groups can be divided into eight subgroups.

A Simple Example

Imagine you have eight moving heads assigned to one group.

You may want to control all eight together for some effects, but at other times you might want to work with only the four fixtures on the left or right side of the stage.

Subgroups let you make that division while retaining the wider fixture group.

As lighting rigs become larger, that additional level of organisation can make them considerably easier to manage.

Direct Fixture Control From WING

The new CONTROL mode gives you much more direct access to individual fixtures.

Fixtures are laid out across the WING matrix and can be selected and adjusted using the motorised faders. Selection can also be filtered using groups and subgroups.

Depending on the fixture, accessible parameters can include:

  • Dimmer
  • Colour
  • Pan
  • Tilt
  • Zoom
  • Iris
  • Focus
  • Gobo rotation
  • Prism rotation

Up to 32 individual control edits can be stored within a preset.

This pushes Wolfmix further towards the detailed hands-on programming associated with a more conventional lighting-console workflow while retaining the W1 at the centre of the system.

Build Your Own Control Surface With Mapping Mode

Not everybody operates a lighting show in the same way, so WING also includes a MAPPING mode.

There are four assignable pages available for the 8 x 5 button matrix, eight motorised faders and assignable encoders.

Functions that can be assigned include:

  • Group dimmers
  • Group solo
  • Flash
  • Presets
  • Live edits
  • Macros
  • Manual DMX
  • Effects
  • Cue List functions

Controls that are not assigned to Wolfmix functions can also send and receive generic MIDI for use with compatible external hardware or software.

How Big Can a W1 + WING System Get?

WING itself supports up to 4 DMX universes / 2,048 channels, with universes 3 and 4 requiring an add-on.

Combined with a compatible Wolfmix W1 system, the setup can operate with up to 8 DMX universes.

Published specifications also list support for up to 680 fixtures and 1,500 beams.

Four Additional DMX Outputs

On the rear of WING are four physical DMX outputs:

  • 2 x 3-pin DMX OUT
  • 2 x 5-pin DMX OUT

Each output can be assigned to an available universe.

That significantly increases the potential scale of a Wolfmix-controlled lighting system while retaining the compact, hardware-based approach that makes the W1 appealing in the first place.

You Do Not Need to Replace Your Existing Wolfmix

This is one of the most important points for existing owners.

Already Own a W1?

WING works with W1 MK1, W1 MK2 and W1 MK3. Existing Wolfmix users do not need to buy a W1 MK3 simply to add WING to their setup.

The connection is made via USB.

The W1 MK3 has been physically designed to sit neatly alongside WING, but compatibility extends to the earlier W1 generations.

Can You Still Use the W1 While Using WING?

Yes.

Projects transfer automatically when WING is connected, while Wolfmix's PIN function allows Cue List, Control or Mapping to remain active on WING while the W1 is used independently.

That means the two surfaces can complement each other rather than simply mirroring one another.

For example, WING can remain on the controls you need immediately while you use the W1 for another part of the show.

Who Is Wolfmix WING For?

Mobile DJs

DJs running larger lighting rigs who want more immediate physical controls and a more structured way to organise a show.

Bands & Musicians

Performers who want repeatable lighting sequences built around songs or individual sections of a live set.

Venues & Clubs

Operators who need a flexible hands-on control surface while retaining the familiar Wolfmix workflow.

Theatre & Live Shows

Cue List, fade and hold timings and GO-based playback make WING relevant where lighting needs to follow a structured sequence.

More Than Just an Add-On

At first glance, Wolfmix WING could easily be mistaken for simply an eight-fader expansion controller. It is much more interesting than that.

The combination of motorised faders, direct fixture control, subgroups, custom mapping and particularly Cue List changes the scale and type of show that can comfortably be operated around the Wolfmix ecosystem.

It also does this without abandoning existing users: W1 MK1, MK2 and MK3 compatibility means an existing Wolfmix can remain at the heart of the system.

Wolfmix WING at DJBox.ie

The Wolfmix W1 has made sophisticated DMX lighting control far more approachable for DJs, performers and lighting users who do not necessarily want a computer sitting beside them at every show.

WING builds on that idea rather than replacing it.

For DJs and performers who like the immediacy of Wolfmix but have wanted more physical control and more structured show programming, WING represents a substantial expansion of what the Wolfmix platform can do.

We will be following the Wolfmix WING closely as it arrives and will update availability and further information as it becomes available.
